Bound in full reindeer, top edge dyed and speckled blue/black, title/author tooled in 23c gold, title label and front decoration on lacunose blue dyed pig, front panel inlaid, leather and acrylic design after detail of wood cut p. 116, similiar leather rendered design in miniature to foot of spine, hand sewn silk headbands, coloured end papers.

Description: Red/brown blind stamped cloth with gilt decoration/lettering to front and spine, complete with 9 large full page plates, elephant folio (540mm by 390mm), hand marbled end papers, top edge dyed and speckled, hand sewn silk head bands.

The book was brought to the shop as a collection of loose pages with detached boards. The pages were collated, guarded and resewn. The top edge was dyed and speckled before silk headbands were sewn in. The badly dented and frayed boards were edged with deep red/burgundy cloth to consolidate loose material and sharpen the corners. The leather joint and spine were attached before antique marbled papers were affixed as doublures and end papers, oversewn for extra strength given the size of the book. Finally the spine and title label were decorated and lettered with 23c gold.

Very rare first account of sport in South Africa and Rhodesia. Includes a slip of paper written and signed by Frank Cannock stating that his quarter mile cycling record still stands. As a child he witnessed the Ninth Kaffir War, later he participated on the 1891 trek into Mashonaland, during the 1890s he became the champion cyclist with the famous Wanderers Sports Club in Johannesburg, then as Dr. Jameson approached Johannesburg he was selected because of his cycling prowess to carry messages for the ZARPs/Transvaal forces encircling the conspirators, putting his cycle to one side he made the first motor-car journey in South Africa from Durban to Johannesburg and on to Cape Town.
